Chronic Fatigue Syndrome/Myalgic Encephalomyelitis, (CFS/ME), is a complicated and devastating disorder which remains a black hole in medicine. Over the past 30 years, since 1989, renowned osteopath and neuroscientist Dr Raymond Perrin has carried out much research into CFS/ME. In 1989, whilst treating a cyclist for lower back pain using osteopathic massage techniques, Dr Raymond Perrin inadvertently relieved the patient of his symptoms of CFS/ME. Since then Dr Raymond Perrin has been researching CFS/ME. It is a multi-system disorder which presents itself differently amongst patients. The cause of CFS/ME is still debated upon and there is no universal diagnosis for the disease either. This means that there is no agreed treatment for patients who are suffering from the symptoms associated with CFS/ME. These symptoms can be severely debilitating and may put a patient’s life completely on hold. Many patients find that they are no longer able to carry out daily activities for themselves and some can end up bed bound or in a wheelchair soon after the initial onset of symptoms.
Dr Perrin’s hypothesis on CFS/ME
Dr Raymond Perrin’s research has led to a strong hypothesis that an abnormality in the lymphatic system, resulting in impaired lymphatic drainage of toxins from the central nervous system, could be responsible for the symptoms that are presented in CFS/ME. These toxins could be from the environment such as air pollutants, bacteria and viruses. They could be byproducts of chemical reactions in the body or the breakdown of certain food molecules, medication or drugs. When the lymphatic system is not working efficiently, these toxins build up resulting in an array of different issues as seen in patients with CFS/ME.
What is the Perrin technique?
This research led to the development and the establishment of The Perrin technique in London. In his own words, Dr Raymond Perrin describes the Perrin technique in London as ‘a manual treatment combining lymphatic drainage, spinal and cranial osteopathy’. He uses specific osteopathic massage techniques, which are designed to promote lymphatic drainage to drain away neurotoxins from the central nervous system, to help manage and eventually alleviate the symptoms that are associated with CFS/ME.
