Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Myalgic Encephalomyelitis also known as CFS/ME is a chronic multi-system disorder characterised by extreme fatigue, aches and pains, sleep abnormalities, cognitive dysfunction, loss of mobility and many other debilitating symptoms. These symptoms can prevent the patient from carrying out their daily activities until they reach a point where they cannot get out of bed and can find themselves in a wheelchair or housebound. Patients may be healthy, active and have very busy lifestyles, but suddenly find themselves affected by CFS/ME and their whole life is put on hold.
The Perrin Technique
Over the last few decades it has been reported that millions of patients across the world suffer from CFS/ME. However, it is estimated that perhaps as much as 80% of these patients remain undiagnosed and are suffering in silence. Dr Raymond Perrin has carried out much research in CFS/ME and has put together a methodology known as The Perrin technique which helps positively diagnose the disease, as well as developing osteopathic techniques to help manage, reduce and combat the symptoms of this disease.
Diagnosis of CFS/ME
Here at Rakhee Osteopathy we are pleased to be able to provide you with the Perrin Technique London to diagnose and manage CFS/ME. We use the Perrin Technique to diagnose patients as having CFS/ME if they display a set of 5 signs and symptoms. Firstly patients present postural or mechanical disturbances of the thoracic spine. Next is breast varicosity and abnormal breast tenderness in a certain area near the left nipple known as Perrin's point. Next we look for tenderness of the coeliac plexus found in the upper central area of the abdomen and lastly examine the head and feel for abnormal or reduced cranial flow.
Management of CFS/ME
If the patient presents with all of these symptoms then they are classified as having CFS/ME and we will put together an individually tailored treatment plan to help combat the symptoms related to this disease. This includes specific osteopathic massage techniques which are designed to manually stimulate fluid motion around the brain and spinal cord. Massage of the soft tissues in the head, neck, back and the chest as well as manipulation of the spine are all carried out to improve blood flow and lymph flow, to encourage drainage of waste products or toxins from the cerebrospinal fluid. The toxins are directed into the blood where they can be metabolised or excreted from the body.
With continued regular treatment, as well as carrying out simple massage techniques at home and maintaining a healthy diet, there will be no toxins left to affect the brain and the body can begin to function correctly to restore good health and wellbeing. Over the last 2 years we have also helped patients suffering from symptoms of long COVID which are similar to CFS/ME, with osteopathic massage techniques as explained by Dr Raymond Perrin.
