Chronic Fatigue Syndrome/Myalgic Encephalomyelitis also known as CFS/ME is a debilitating and disabling chronic multi-system disorder that remains a mystery despite such advances in medicine over the decades. It is a disease that can affect people of all genders, all ages, ethnicities and socioeconomic groups. Patients can present symptoms of extreme fatigue, which can begin after exertion and slowly become permanent until they are no longer able to carry out their daily activities.
These symptoms can affect many different systems in the body and may differ from patient to patient, resulting in varying degrees of cognitive and autonomic dysfunction. CFS/ME can have a detrimental effect on the patient’s career, education and social and personal life, affecting relationships with friends and loved ones as well as putting strain on others who may be responsible for the patient’s care.
SARS & Long COVID
After the SARS pandemic in 2002-2004, some patients developed symptoms that were very similar to that of patients with CFS/ME. Once again, in 2021 it has been found that some patients who have suffered from an acute COVID-19 infection have persistent fatigue, aches and pains, depression and non-restorative sleep (very similar to the symptoms of CFS/ME) for more than 4 weeks following a positive diagnosis of COVID-19. This has been termed long COVID and is defined as a long-term state of chronic fatigue characterised by post-exertional neuroimmune exhaustion.
Stress on the body as a result of a viral infection, as seen in COVID-19 or SARS, and other factors such as psychological stress, injury and exposure to environmental pollutants and chemicals is thought to affect the function of the lymphatic system. The malfunction of the lymphatic system can result in the buildup of toxins in the body, especially in the cerebrospinal fluid, which suppresses the function of the sympathetic system, resulting in the symptoms that are seen in CFS/ME patients.
The Perrin Technique in London
The Perrin Technique in London has been used for almost three decades to help patients cope with their symptoms of CFS/ME. This technique can be used to diagnose the disease and help reduce the severity of the symptoms. The Perrin technique in London involves manual therapy in the form of specialised massage techniques applied to the back, neck, shoulders and head. This is thought to encourage lymphatic drainage to help remove toxins from the body, improve the mechanical function of the bones and joints and reduce the inflammation of the spine, promoting better health overall.
